Stars Ministry Uganda (SMU) is a non-profit organization working with people with disabilities (PWDs), children especially, and their families, in the Luzira area of Kampala district, in Uganda. The organization started its ministry operations in 2016 with formal registration of its first beneficiaries in March 2016, and had its very first program activity in May 2016.
The ministry’s aim is to share the love of Christ, by encouraging and supporting families that have people affected with disability, and create awareness in the church and the community about disability. The ministry desires to see local churches embrace Disability Ministry by accepting PWDs as part of the community, and support them to be involved in church and community activities. The ministry’s vision is to see the needs of People with Disabilities, including their need for God, being met by the church SMU’s formation is driven by the realization that people and children with disabilities in their community are marginalized and neglected. Society holds negative attitudes towards them, often considering them cursed and isolating them.
Through needs assessment and home visits in Luzira, Mutungo, and surrounding areas, SMU discovered that parents and caregivers of individuals with disabilities are overwhelmed, particularly single mothers. These families often live in poverty, unable to meet the medical and educational needs of their disabled children. In response, SMU provides wholistic support, including therapy, education, life skills development, counselling, mobility assistance, and spiritual development. What we do currently, SMU holds special needs classes (individualized education) at the Stars Day Care and Learning Center for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) who have the cognitive capacity to learn and develop. The organization acknowledges the challenges faced by this group in terms of cognitive development due to a lack of specialized educators, limited resources, and caregiver.
